During the winter of 2016/2017, OUSOS researchers Linus Andersson and Petra Sandberg have been assisting Skuggteatern, a local theater in Umeå, in their work with the play ”Provsmakaren” (i.e., ”The Taster”). Provsmakaren is a play for preschool children with a thematic emphasis on memory and sensation. The protagonist in the play cannot remember his father. Aided by the children in the audience, he uses items in his backpack that somehow – by smell, taste or form – make him remember.
During the production of the play, director Karin Malmberg and producer Frida Allberg contacted the chemosensory laboratory at the Department of Psychology, Umeå University. Linus and Petra provided a theoretical background for the association between our chemical senses and memory and suggested some fun sensory tests that could captivate children. The sensory tests are included with other materials for teachers and parents to try out after the show.
